## ✦ Chapter 3 — The Cages

## ✦ A New Problem
My work with the MobStand has solved one problem. Perhaps too well. I no longer have to spend my days standing beside animal pens with a sword in my hand. The MobStand handles much of that work for me, and I have grown rather fond of being able to walk away from a problem and let my creation deal with it. But solving one problem has a habit of revealing another. I began keeping more animals. It seemed reasonable at first. If I no longer needed to reduce the herd myself, why not keep more?
Then I ran out of room. Cows. Pigs. Sheep. Chickens. Even some of the more unusual creatures I had encountered during my travels. Soon I had pens scattered all over the place. Moving animals from one pen to another was becoming almost as tedious as tending to them in the first place.
I needed a better way.

## ✦ The Idea
I started thinking about cages. Not ordinary cages. The problem with an ordinary cage is that it is built around the creature. Build the cage somewhere else and the creature is still where it started. I needed the cage to somehow hold the creature **within it**. I remembered something from my earlier experiments. Magic doesn't always have to change the thing it touches. Sometimes it can change the relationship between two things.
That gave me an idea. What if I could make the cage store the creature inside the realm of magic? It sounded ridiculous. Naturally, I began experimenting immediately.

## ✦ The First Attempt
The first cage did absolutely nothing. I placed a chicken inside it. The chicken stared at me. I stared at the chicken. Nothing happened. I tried again. Nothing. I changed the materials. Nothing. I changed the enchantment. Still nothing. At one point I became convinced that the chicken was mocking me.
I may have spent too much time working alone. Eventually I noticed that while the animal was in the cage, it was weightless, stored within the realm of magic yet still identifiable within the cage. The magic had stored the mob.

## ✦ The Discovery
I tried it again. This time, I watched carefully. The moment the creature entered the cage, the magic reacted. For a brief moment, the cage glowed. Then the creature was gone. Only not completely gone. Just semi-transparent. A faint magical imprint. The creature was still there. Completely unphased, unconcerned, as though it knew it was safe within the cage.

## ✦ Letting Them Out
Of course, capturing a creature is only useful if it can eventually be released. That part took considerably longer. The first few attempts resulted in nothing. Then one finally worked. I placed the cage down. The magic reacted. And the creature appeared. Alive. Unharmed. And, judging by the look it gave me, thoroughly unimpressed with my work. I couldn't help but laugh. I had spent weeks trying to understand the magic behind the cage. The creature seemed to understand it perfectly.

## ✦ More Than Animals
Once I knew the process worked, I began experimenting with other creatures. Some were easy. Others were considerably more difficult and would fight the magic. Zombies, skeletons and others wearing armor and carrying tools or weapons put up trememdous resistance to the magic of the cages. Ultimately the magic would overcome the creature and store it but it would result in the weapons and armor either being dropped or destroyed. I discovered that the magic does not care whether a creature is friendly or hostile.
If the cage can bind to it, the creature can be contained. This opens possibilities I had not considered. A creature that would normally be difficult to move can now be transported. A rare animal can be preserved until it is needed. Even creatures I would never want wandering freely around my home can be safely contained.
For the first time, I realized that I hadn't created a way to build better pens. I had created a way to **carry the creatures themselves**.

## ✦ The Cages
I have decided to call them **MobCages**.
Simple enough. A cage that can hold a creature within its magic and release it when needed. It may be one of the most useful discoveries I have made so far. The MobStand taught me how to give purpose to an object. The Disenchanter taught me how to separate magic from an object. Now the MobCage has taught me something else. Magic does not always have to destroy, change, or remove.
Sometimes...
It can simply **hold**.
And perhaps that is just as powerful.
---
There is still much I don't understand. I have already started wondering what else could be contained. What other creatures might respond to the magic? How long can they remain within a cage? And what happens if I combine this discovery with some of my other work? I suspect I may have just created another problem for myself.
Fortunately...
I rather enjoy solving those.

## ✦ A Note About My Work
The MobCage began as an experiment to solve a simple problem: moving creatures without having to chase them across half the world. The process has since been refined into something others can use. If you need to capture, transport, and release creatures of your own, you can put my discovery to work.
