## ✦ Chapter 1 — The Butcher ## ✦ Chapter 1 — The Butcher
I have never minded hard work. I have never minded hard work. Building farms. Tending crops. Mining for materials. Gathering food. These are simply things that need to be done, and I have never been one to complain about doing them. But there is one job I have grown to hate. **Butchering animals.** Every morning I walk through the fields and check on the animals. The cows need tending. The pigs need feeding. The chickens need gathering. And eventually, there are simply too many of them. There is no avoiding it. I pick up my sword and begin reducing the herd. It isn't the killing that bothers me. It is the repetition. Day after day. Week after week. The same animals. The same sword. The same work.
Building farms. Tending crops. Mining for materials. Gathering food. These are simply things that need to be done, and I have never been one to complain about doing them. And when I am not dealing with my own animals, there are always hostile creatures to contend with. Creepers in the fields. Zombies wandering near the house. Skeletons appearing after dark. Sometimes I find myself wondering how much of my life is spent doing things that could perhaps be done by someone—or something—else. There must be a better way than doing this myself every single day.

## ✦ The Experiment ## ✦ The Experiment
I have spent years studying the strange relationship between magic and the objects of this world. I have spent years studying the strange relationship between magic and the objects of this world. I have seen ordinary things perform extraordinary tasks when exposed to the right kind of magic. So I began experimenting. My first attempts were disappointing. A sword enchanted with one spell would simply glow. A tool placed beneath another spell would do nothing at all. I tried commanding tools to move on their own. Nothing. I tried giving simple instructions to objects. Still nothing. I was beginning to think I was wasting my time.
I have seen ordinary things perform extraordinary tasks when exposed to the right kind of magic. Then, one evening, I noticed the armor stand in the corner of my workshop. It had been there for months, perhaps longer. It was holding an old set of armor that I no longer used. I stared at it for quite some time. An armor stand is already shaped like a person. It can wear armor. It can stand where I place it. Perhaps I have been approaching this all wrong. Perhaps I don't need to make it alive. Perhaps I only need to give it purpose**.

## ✦ The Awakening ## ✦ The Awakening
I returned to my experiments the following evening. I returned to my experiments the following evening. This time I changed my approach. Instead of trying to make the armor stand move, I tried to give it a task. The first attempt did nothing. The second caused the armor stand to fall over. The third made it turn slightly before becoming completely still again. The fourth attempt was different. It gave the stand arms. At first, I considered that a failure as well. It still wouldn't kill anything. But then I realized what I had actually accomplished. It could hold things. Weapons. Tools. Perhaps even other objects. That gave me some small sense of success, despite the fact that I still had no idea how to make it do the one thing I wanted.

I turned around. I turned around. The armor stand was standing. I stared at it. It stared back. At least, it appeared to. Then I noticed something that made me stop breathing for a moment. It was holding my sword. I had not put the sword in its hands.

I wasn't sure what would happen next. I wasn't sure what would happen next. There was only one way to find out. I opened the door to the animal pen and waited. Nothing happened. The armor stand didn't move. I waited longer. Still nothing. Then suddenly...
The work was done. I stood completely still. I hadn't seen the armor stand move. I hadn't even heard it approach. The animal was simply gone. I looked at the armor stand. It was back where I had left it. Standing. Waiting. I gave it another task. The result was the same. It didn't complain. It didn't get tired. It didn't ask for food. It simply waited for me to give it something to do. I think I stood there for several minutes just staring at it.
There was only one way to find out. For the first time in a very long while, I could walk away from the animal pens without worrying about what needed to be done next. I may have finally found the answer to my problem.

## ✦ Something Else Was Waiting ## ✦ Something Else Was Waiting
I discovered something else that night. I discovered something else that night. I hadn't intended for the armor stand to deal with hostile creatures. At least, I don't think I did. A group of zombies wandered too close to my home after dark. I reached for my sword. Before I could draw it, I heard the familiar sound of metal cutting through flesh and bone.

Then silence. Then silence. I looked toward the armor stand. It hadn't moved. The zombies were gone. I checked the area. Nothing but Mob loot from defeated mobs. I returned to the armor stand. It was still standing in its place. Waiting. That was when I realized I had created something different from what I originally intended. I hadn't simply made a helper for the animal pens. I had created something that understood its purpose. Something that could deal with the work I had grown tired of doing myself. And perhaps most importantly...

I still don't know exactly where the magic came from. I still don't know exactly where the magic came from. Perhaps I never will. Maybe that is the most interesting part of all. I did not create life. I did not create a creature. I simply found a way to give purpose to something that had never possessed one. An armor stand. Something ordinary. Something that had spent its existence standing still. Until now. I have decided to call it a **MobStand**. An armor stand brought to life by magic, given a task, and trusted to carry it out.
Perhaps I never will. I have written down everything I can remember about the process. There are still many things I don't understand. But tonight, before I close this journal, there is one question I cannot stop thinking about.

## ✦ A Note About My Work ## ✦ A Note About My Work
I have spent considerable time refining the process. I have spent considerable time refining the process. What began as an experiment in my workshop has become something that can be recreated by others. If you have an armor stand of your own and wish to give it a purpose, I have preserved the process so that others may put it to work.
