✦ Chapter 2 — The Disenchanter

"Magic should not be lost simply because the vessel that held it is no longer useful."

— Steve

✦ The Beginning

I have spent countless hours gathering rare materials. I have crafted weapons that have carried me through countless battles. Pickaxes that have broken thousands upon thousands of blocks. Armor that has protected me when I had no business surviving.

And I have enchanted all of them with the magic of this world. But there has always been something that bothered me.

What happens to the magic when the item is destroyed?

Every time a treasured sword finally breaks, I wonder where the enchantments went. Every time a pickaxe wears down beyond repair, the magic that was placed upon it disappears with it. And when an enchanted piece of armor is lost forever...

Does the magic simply vanish? I have never been able to accept that. Magic is not ordinary. It should not simply disappear because the object carrying it has become useless. There must be something left behind. I intend to find it.

I began my research the same way I always do. I searched. I searched through forgotten libraries. I questioned wandering villagers. I explored ancient ruins and places that I probably should not have explored. I studied enchanted books. I studied enchanted weapons. I studied enchanted armor. Most importantly, I experimented. A lot. Most of my experiments were failures. Some produced nothing more than ordinary books. Some caused the enchantment to disappear completely.

One experiment destroyed the item I was working on before I could determine what had happened. I have stopped keeping track of how many times I have failed. But I have learned something from every failure. Magic does not simply sit inside an enchanted item. It is bound to it. The enchantment becomes part of the item itself. The question was not how to remove the magic.

The question was how to separate it.

✦ The Discovery

I finally found the answer. I still don't completely understand how it works. But it works.

Enchantments can be separated from the items that carry them.

I discovered that the magical essence of an enchantment can be carefully drawn out of an item and preserved within a book. The first time it worked, I thought I had ruined the item. The enchantment disappeared. I was already preparing to throw the book away when I noticed something.

The book was glowing. Not like an enchanted book normally glows. This was different. The magic was still there. I had done it. I had actually done it. I had taken the enchantment from the item and preserved it. I spent the rest of the night testing the process. It worked again. And again. And again. The implications are enormous. A sword no longer has to carry an enchantment until the day it breaks. A valuable enchantment can be removed and saved.

A tool that has served its purpose does not have to take its magic with it when it is discarded. The magic can survive. But I discovered something else. There is a limit. The item must still be intact. If the item breaks before I recover its enchantments... The magic is gone. There is no second chance.

I learned that lesson the hard way.

✦ The Problem With Curses

I thought I had solved the problem. I was wrong. Not all enchantments behave the same way. I discovered this when I attempted to extract a curse. The process started normally. Then everything changed. The magic resisted. It was almost as if the enchantment knew what I was trying to do. I tried again. The result was worse. The curse fought against the extraction, and for a moment I thought I had lost the entire item. I stopped immediately.

I began studying the problem from the beginning. Curses are different. They do not want to be separated from their vessels. They resist. They fight. And attempting to force them out can have consequences. I have discovered that when a curse is involved, failure can destroy the item completely. Worse, any enchantments I have not already recovered can be lost with it. I will not make the mistake of treating a curse like an ordinary enchantment again. I have learned an important lesson.

Some magic can be preserved.

Some magic must be fought for.

And some magic comes with a price.

✦ The Disenchanter

I have finally given my spell a name.

The Disenchanter.

It allows me to recover the magic hidden within weapons, tools, and armor before their usefulness comes to an end. The enchantments can be removed. The magic can be preserved. And the item can finally be allowed to serve its purpose without taking that magic with it when it is gone. But curses... Curses are another matter entirely. I have learned that there are some things in this world that do not want to be separated from us. And when dealing with them, caution is not optional. It is survival.

You'd better be careful.

I don't believe this is the end of my research. If anything, I think I have only uncovered another layer of the magic that surrounds us. There are still enchantments I don't fully understand. here are still forces I cannot explain. And if magic can be removed from an object... I have to wonder what else can be done with it.

Perhaps I should find out.

✦ A Note About My Work

The Disenchanter began as another experiment in my workshop. It has since become something that others can use to recover enchantments that might otherwise be lost forever. I have preserved the process so that others can put it to use. If you wish to recover the magic from your own weapons, tools, and armor, you can acquire the Disenchanter and continue the work yourself.

Acquire My Disenchanter

Use my discovery wisely.

And remember...

You'd better be careful.
